Install VLC UnRAR
Make sure you have VLC installed, you can download it from http://www.videolan.org
Run the setup .exe file, it will install the plugin files for you.
Use Add/Remove programs from the Control Panel to automatically remove the plugin. If this fails manually remove the following files from Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\plugins
Mac OS X
Unzip the file and run the package installer inside. It will automatically install the plugin files for you.
To remove the plugin either remove VLC.app from your Applications folder and re-install VLC or manually remove the plugin files, you might have to use a terminal for this.
The following files needs to be removed
Unix-like (GNU/Linux, FreeBSD)
Extract the tar.gz file with tar (tar xvzf file.tar.gz) then run sh ./install.sh as root. On systems with sudo installed such as Ubuntu you can do sudo sh ./install.sh
If the installation script fails for some reason you can manually install the files. Copy libaccess_filter_unrar_plugin.so into /usr/local/lib/vlc/access_filter and libunrar_dvdnav_plugin.so into /usr/local/lib/vlc/access. The path might differ and could be for example /usr/lib/vlc
To remove the plugin remove the following files from your system
Activating the plugin
The DVD unrar plugin is activated by default but the other plugin needs to be activated before you’re able to play RAR archived movies.
Launch VLC as usual, go to Settings -> Preferences -> Input / Codecs -> Access filters. Tick the “UnRAR” checkbox, the click “Save”. That’s it. With VLC 0.9.x you need to click “All” to see all available preferences.
You can now watch RAR archived files by simply opening the first file in the volume (.rar, .r00, part01.rar, part001.rar).
