VLC UnRAR license

The VLC UnRAR plugin brings together code from different projects and thus its license is a bit of a mess. Here is a roundup of the components and their respective licenses.

libunrar

Modified, static, UnRAR library with seek support. UnRAR license applies to ALL of this source code, the file libunrar/license.txt contains the full license information.

libaccess_filter_unrar_plugin.{so,dll}

Source: modules/access_filter/unrar

Contains the following components

  • unrar.c 2-clause BSD license
  • Statically linked with libunrar, UnRAR license.

libunrar_dvdnav_plugin.{so,dll}

Source: modules/access

Contains the following components

  • unrar_wrapper.{c,h}, dvdnav_ext.h, 2-clause BSD license
  • unrar_dvdnav.c, GPL (modified dvdnav.c from VLC)
  • Statically linked with libunrar, UnRAR license.
  • Statically linked with libdvdnav, GPL

      The source code of UnRAR utility is freeware. This means:

   1. All copyrights to RAR and the utility UnRAR are exclusively

      to re-create the RAR compression algorithm, which is proprietary.
      Distribution of modified UnRAR sources in separate form or as a

      not be used to develop a RAR (WinRAR) compatible archiver.
